The green tracks from Andalucía

An unknown beauty of Andalucía consists of the Spanish railway called the green routes.

These are old railway tracks, currently public property, which are prepared for human passageway. Some even never been used as railway. These tracks are recently prepared for use by bikes, horse riding and hiking.

The tracks, beams en stones are removed, changing the railway into compact, comfortable recreative roads, with slopes of a maximum from 2 to 3 percent.

Also do these roads traverse sparsely populated regions. In some cases even nature reserve or even preserved regions.

Both at the beginning and the end of these roads there are little hotels and rural restaurants where for a small price we can eat and stay the night. Some of these routes start or end in small typical villages which are fully prepared for hikers, bikers and horsemen.

They traverse agricultural lands, mountain regions etc. Depending on the season it is possible to find wild fauna like the Spanish Goat, the wild boar, Coragyps atratus, Aegypius monachus, Gyps fulvus, Golden Eagle, Eastern Imperial Eagle, Accipiter Gentilis ,Bonelli's eagle Towards the evening it is possible to see Genetta genetta), fox,, ferrets and other kinds of nightly predators.

A observing hiker will notice during his journey all kinds of grain plants, several types of olive trees which are used to make the different kinds of olive oil ( arbequina, acebuchina, picual, hojiblanca, etc.).

Also he will notice different kinds of vines ( in Andalucía smaller than in the rest of Spain ), "pata negra" pigs, unattached bulls as also goats and sheep whose milk is used for delightful cheeses. The variations of cheese exists of fresh cheeses, young and  matured cheeses, even cheese conserved in olive oil.

Hiking in these regions shows where all these typical products from Andalucía have their origin. The meat products from the Iberico pig, the olive oil, the fragrant wines (manzanilla, fino, jerez, moscatel, montilla, etc.), the cheese as others products originate from the rural country, like the honey and aromatic plants, products derived from cork, leather and much much more.

Currently exist 9 green routes in Andalucía ( a total of 50 in Spain ) These vary from easy until difficult. The longest route covers 65 km. Also present they are preparing actively new routes for use. Al the routes are well provided with plenty of resting places which are all situated in beautiful environments.

The best season to visit all this is Spring or Autumn because in that time of the year the temperatures are the most pleasant en the colours are at most beautiful. The rest of the year these regions suffer from extreme temperatures.
